The community commemorated Emancipation Day with a symbolic march and cultural performances honoring the legacy of freedom.
On August 1st, the people of San Andrés gathered to commemorate Emancipation Day—an emblematic date that marks the abolition of slavery and honors the historical struggle for freedom by the Raizal community.
The day began with a symbolic march from Simón Bolívar Park to the WTF Cultural Center, where a rich artistic and cultural program was held. With banners, chants, and messages of unity, participants reaffirmed their collective identity and the enduring spirit of resistance, justice, and historical memory.

Following the march, the community came together to enjoy a vibrant showcase of local talent, featuring live music, traditional performances, and cultural expressions rooted in the Afro-Caribbean heritage of the islands. The event also encouraged intergenerational dialogue and reflection on the historical significance and contemporary challenges faced by Afro-descendant communities in the Archipelago.
The Government of the Archipelago commends the Raizal community’s leadership and reaffirms its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen cultural identity, preserve collective memory, and promote inclusion, dialogue, and social cohesion.
